Transparency and Accountability
Thursday, 16 April 2009 18:15
Transparency and Accountability (International Standards Organization – ISO 26000) Organizations around the world, as well as their stakeholders, are becoming increasingly aware of the need for socially responsible behaviour. The aim of social responsibility is to contribute to sustainable development, including health and the welfare of society. An organization's performance in relation to the society in which it operates and its impact on the environment has become a critical part of measuring its overall performance and its ability to continue operating effectively. That is, in part, a reflection of the growing recognition of the need for ensuring healthy eco-systems, social equity and good organizational governance. Organizations are subject to greater scrutiny by their various stakeholders, including customers or consumers, workers and their trade unions, members, the community, non-governmental organizations, students, financiers, donors, investors, companies and other entities. The perception of an organization’s social responsibility performance can influence: . its reputation; . its ability to attract and retain male and female workers and/or members, customers, clients or users; . the maintenance of employees' morale, commitment and productivity; . the view of investors, donors, sponsors and the financial community; and . its relationship with companies, governments, the media, suppliers, peers, customers and the community in which it operates.

Responsible Business in post conflict and weak governance zones
Monday, 13 April 2009 20:43
Responsible Business in post conflict and weak governance zones – The AICC has been facilitating a multilayered dialogue between mining companies operate in Katanga and the provincial government of Katanga: Under the present DRC’s Mining Code, organizations will argue that social infrastructure development falls under the jurisdiction of the state. In contrast, DRC’s state argues that the mining companies are obliged to develop social infrastructure in the interest of the community where their activities take place. The result is a grey area where social development falls to gain any prominence because actors refuse to take responsibility on the basis of poorly outlined public policy. Raising the confusion and misunderstanding which currently exist around the definition of Social Responsibility , Corporate Social Responsibility as defined in the DRC’s Mining Code and the social contributions that the provincial government in Katanga requires to the mining companies, The African Institute of Corporate Citizenship (AICC) in collaboration with SARW, and the provincial minister of Mines in Katanga organized a first in the history of the province - 2 days workshops dialogue between mining companies with activities in Katanga , Civil society , NGOs , Donors and the government authorities of Katanga – DRC to reach a common position to address the responsibilities and roles of both state and mining companies on issues related to the building of basic infrastructure, and also to the overall understanding of the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility in the DRC.
